Backlinks building is an essential part of SEO. It not just makes your site easy for search engines to know what your site is all about but it helps in ranking your site too in SERPs (search engine result pages). Lately, I came across so many people that asked me the same question and that’s “Are Nofollow backlinks important in terms of SEO?” My answer was “YES!”. Now to know how then continue reading…
First of all, let’s understand what are nofollow backlinks in brief.
What are Nofollow backlinks:
Any link, attributed with rel text “nofollow” is known as a nofollow backlink. Ex:
<a href="http://example.com" rel="nofollow">Anchor Text</a>
Nofollow tag is used to let search engines know where they have to crawl and where not. Wherever we use
rel="nofollow", that part won’t be crawled by search engine bots.
Adding Nofollow tag to any link makes it an exclusion for SERP bots. We usually use the nofollow tag with external links, affiliate links or the links we don’t want search engines to index from our site.
Are No-Follow tags completely being ignored by Google?
No-follow tags don’t pass the link juice so technically they are useless. If we build 1000 nofollow links and none of them is being indexed by Google then what’s the benefit of such kind of struggle?
Well, it’s not completely true. Nofollow links do have their own importance and to discuss them, here we are with this article.
Importance of Nofollow Backlinks for SEO
They build authority
A site with lots of nofollow links across the web makes it look more genuine and authentic. Hunger for 100% dofollow links could make your site look spammy so a balance between nofollow and dofollow backlinks should be maintained.
They can lead to many other links
The concept of things going viral on social media explains this fact. If you post something on your social media handles and considering it goes viral then chances are that it will help you gain dofollow backlinks from other sites including high authority ones.
Just for example suppose you post an image on Twitter and it goes viral then you can expect other sites to feature that image on their site and give you backlinks for it.
They drive you traffic
Without traffic, it’s hard to expect any conversions through your site. Traffic leads to drive more sales, ad clicks, and more subscribers. Nofollow links can drive you tons of traffic if used properly. Just imagine if you post a link on Twitter that is a nofollow and it goes viral immediately then it will drive you lots of traffic.
They drive more leads
It’s only logical that if you’re attracting additional site traffic then you’re increasing your chance of converting more leads as well, right? If you know certain NoFollow links are providing consistent referral traffic, your focus should be turning these pages into high-conversion pages (similar to a landing page), by experimenting with different calls-to-action offers and placement.
Should we build Nofollow backlinks anymore?
SEO is a gradual process. It takes time as well as patience. Balance is highly required or else your site won’t be treated by Google in the way it should. As we discussed the importance of nofollow backlinks for SEO, focus on them too instead of just building dofollow backlinks.
